NextGen Acela Sets New Pace for American Rail Travel

Starting Thursday, August 28, travelers along the Northeast Corridor will experience a new era of high-speed rail as Amtrak launches its NextGen Acela service. Connecting Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston, the sleek new trains promise faster, smarter, and more comfortable journeys.

“This is more than a new train it is an evolution of travel,” said Amtrak President Roger Harris. “In just a few weeks, history will be made as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”

What Riders Can Expect

Booking Made Easy Customers can reserve seats and manage itineraries through the Amtrak mobile app, website, or station kiosks. As the launch date nears, Amtrak will release more details on how to identify and select NextGen Acela options. During the transition, both current Acela trains and NextGen models will operate side by side.

Premium Onboard Experience NextGen Acela trains are designed for productivity and comfort. Travelers will enjoy free, high-speed 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, individual power outlets, and personal reading lights.

More Trains Coming Soon Five new trainsets will begin service this month, with additional units joining the fleet through 2027.

Built in America, for America

The new fleet was assembled in Hornell, New York, by skilled union workers using parts from over 180 suppliers across 29 states. The project has generated approximately 15,000 U.S. jobs.

Part of a Larger Transformation

NextGen Acela is just one piece of Amtrak’s sweeping modernization plan, which includes:

  • New Amtrak Airo trains for the Cascades, Northeast Regional, and East Coast routes
  • More efficient long-distance locomotives
  • Refreshed interiors in Coaches, Dining Cars, Sleepers, and Sightseer Lounges, featuring upgraded cushions, lighting, and finishes

With NextGen Acela, Amtrak is not just speeding up travel it is redefining it.
