The newly elected members of Bangladesh’s 13th national parliament are set to take their oaths on Tuesday, February 17, marking the formal transition following Thursday’s national election. Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaniz Mowla confirmed the date on Saturday evening, a day after the interim government issued the gazette naming 297 elected lawmakers.
Earlier in the day, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy that the oath‑taking would not be delayed beyond February 16 or 17, noting that preparations were already underway inside the National Parliament complex.
Among the 297 MPs‑elect, the BNP holds a commanding majority with 209 seats, while three seats went to its alliance partners. Jamaat‑e‑Islami secured 68 seats, and nine additional seats were won by its electoral allies.
With the oath ceremony now scheduled, the newly elected parliament is poised to begin its next chapter, setting the stage for the formation of the new government.
