The Ministry of Home Affairs and the Roads and Highways Department have been ordered to adopt rules and regulations to manage the operation of auto-rickshaws on Dhaka streets, considering the livelihood of the low-income group.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina came up with the order when she was presiding over the cabinet meeting held at her office in Dhaka on Monday, Md Mahbub Hossain said.

The auto-rickshaw drivers have reacted against the decision to oust their vehicles from the city street and the issue came to the attention of the prime minister, Hossain said this while sharing the outcomes of today’s cabinet meeting during a press conference held at the Secretariat in Dhaka this afternoon.

“She (PM) categorically ordered not to take any decision to remove auto-rickshaws from the city streets, ignoring the livelihood of the drivers. The issue of their livelihood will have to be considered sincerely,” Hossain said.
