The National Citizen Party has issued a sharp warning ahead of the 12 February national elections, declaring it will not allow loan defaulters or dual citizens to contest under any circumstance. Party spokesperson Asif Mahmud delivered the message on Saturday, stressing that no “excuse or pretext” would justify bending the rules.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s temporary headquarters in Bangla Motor, Mahmud accused the Election Commission of showing signs of bias. He claimed the Commission appeared to be operating under the influence of the “muscle power of a particular political party” and other pressures.
He argued that if necessary, the Election Commission should be reconstituted and the election date pushed back to ensure a fair and independent process.
Mahmud said the NCP and its partners in the 10 party alliance would not permit what he described as a “settled” or “carefree” election. He insisted they would resist any attempt by the government or the Commission to stage an uncontested or predetermined vote.
The former adviser to the local government and rural development ministry added that the alliance would closely observe the Election Commission’s actions on Sunday, the final day of appeal hearings related to candidacy restoration.
