NCP and Gono Odhikar Parishad Explore Reform-Centric Alliance Outside BNP and Jamaat

Leaders of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and the Gono Odhikar Parishad are in talks to form a new alliance of like-minded parties, aiming to position themselves as moderate democrats distinct from both the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami.

Party insiders say the two groups believe that to establish themselves as genuine moderates, they must avoid being “tagged” with either of the dominant opposition blocs. Instead, they are working to build an independent political platform focused on reform proposals and the July Charter, which could extend into the upcoming elections.

NCP Joint Convener Sarwar Tusher confirmed that discussions are underway but remain at an early stage. “Initial talks on certain issues among various political parties are going on and have not been finalised yet. Primarily, the possible alliance will be reform-centric and time will tell whether it will become election-centric,” he said.

Addressing speculation about ties with Jamaat, Sarwar rejected the notion, stressing that the NCP has maintained its own political stance from the beginning. “It’s not just about avoiding controversy. We have held certain political positions from the very beginning and we have never compromised on it. Regarding reforms, we have many similarities with all the other parties except the BNP. But we have been framed separately only with Jamaat,” he added.

The move signals an effort by smaller parties to carve out a centrist space in Bangladesh’s political landscape, with reform and governance issues at the core of their agenda.
