In just 30 seconds on Tuesday, August 5, the entire village of Dharali and the Harsil Valley were ravaged by a destructive flash flood caused by a glacial burst from the nearby Khir Ganga glacier. The floodwaters blocked the Bhagirathi River, creating new risks and altering its course, which led to further flooding in adjacent regions.

The floodwaters destroyed homes, hotels, and restaurants, leaving a trail of destruction across 13.5 acres. The ancient village, perched at an altitude of 9,005 feet above sea level and famed for its natural beauty and tourist appeal, now bears the scars of nature’s wrath. According to the 2011 Census, the village was home to 137 families with a total population of 583.
