The government has declared a national day of mourning on Tuesday to honor those who lost their lives, including law enforcement personnel, during the quota reform movement.
The decision was made at a meeting of the cabinet of ministers, held on Monday at the Prime Minister’s office, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Khasina. Cabinet Secretary Mahbub Hossain shared this with reporters after the meeting.
The quota reform movement, which began in the first week of July, turned violent on July 15. Clashes occurred in Dhaka and several other places on July 16, resulting in deaths and injuries.
Riots and violence spread rapidly across the country, with the death toll rising. In response to the widespread violence and to maintain order, the government imposed curfews and deployed the military across the country.
