When Disney’s live-action Aladdin premiered in 2019 under the direction of Guy Ritchie, it became a global hit, earning more than $1 billion at the box office against a budget of about $183 million. The film starred Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar. Its success naturally sparked talk of a sequel, with Disney reportedly announcing plans for Aladdin 2 in 2020 and suggesting that much of the original cast would return.
Since then, however, the project has been mired in uncertainty. Industry observers have described the sequel as stuck in development limbo, with the global pandemic and Hollywood strikes often cited as major reasons for the lack of progress.
Speculation reignited recently when an unofficial post on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that filming for Aladdin 2 would begin next year. Naomi Scott, who played Princess Jasmine, directly responded to the rumor, writing: “Completely fake… you can spread the word.” Her blunt denial quickly shut down the idea that production was imminent.
Scott’s comment does not necessarily mean the sequel has been cancelled, but it makes clear that no filming date has been set at least not to her knowledge. Until Walt Disney Pictures issues an official announcement, the status of Aladdin 2 remains speculative. Industry analysts suggest that if the project is still alive, it is likely in the early stages of scripting, scheduling, or financing, far from entering production.
For now, fans of the 2019 hit will have to wait for Disney to confirm whether Aladdin’s story will continue on the big screen.
