After much discussion and debate, the name of the traditional procession celebrating the Bengali New Year has been officially changed to “Borshoboron Anondo Shobhayatra.” This announcement was made by Professor Dr. Md. Azharul Islam Sheikh during a press conference held on Friday morning at the Osman Jamal Auditorium of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.

The conference, which focused on the various aspects of celebrating Pohela Boishakh and Bengali New Year 1432, was attended by notable figures including Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan, Convener of the Central Coordination Committee for Bengali New Year 1432 Professor Dr. Saima Hock Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, and other members of the central coordination committee and subcommittees.

During the press conference, it was emphasized that the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University plays a significant role in celebrating the Bengali New Year through a vibrant and colorful procession. This event holds special cultural significance in the country. As in previous years, the Faculty is preparing to organize the procession, which is expected to be larger and more spectacular than ever before, showcasing diversity and participation from various ethnic groups.

Initiated in the 1980s, the procession was recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s important cultural heritage on November 30, 2016, following a request from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Culture. Each year, the procession features a variety of symbolic artworks, making it a highlight of the celebrations.
