Bangladesh pace sensation Mustafizur Rahman has etched his name into the cricketing history books by becoming the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in the Indian Premier League. Surpassing long-standing record holder Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur achieved this milestone during Delhi Capitals’ thrilling match against Punjab Kings on Friday night.
With figures of three wickets for 33 runs in his four overs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Mustafizur’s tally now stands at 65 wickets from 60 IPL innings. This remarkable achievement eclipses Shakib’s previous record of 63 wickets, accumulated over nine seasons and 70 matches.
Mustafizur began the match with 62 wickets. He quickly drew level with Shakib by dismissing Punjab opener Prabhsimran Singh in his first over, caught by Tristan Stubbs. In the 16th over, he took another crucial wicket, dismissing Shashank Singh caught again by Stubbs, thus breaking the record. He added one more wicket in the final over removing Marco Jansen while Stubbs completed his third catch behind the stumps.
Though narrowly missing a fourth wicket when a top-edge from Marcus Stoinis was safely caught, Mustafizur’s spell was undoubtedly a highlight in a high-scoring game. Despite Punjab posting a formidable 206 for 8, Delhi Capitals chased down the target with three balls remaining, losing six wickets in the process.
Joining Delhi late in the tournament, Mustafizur played only three matches, claiming four wickets before making this record-breaking performance. Now, the “cutter master” is expected to join the Bangladesh squad in Pakistan for a three-match T20I series, adding further excitement to his already illustrious career.
