UK police confirmed on Saturday that two suspects have been arrested after multiple people were stabbed on a train in Cambridgeshire, eastern England. A “large-scale” emergency response was launched, with several victims taken to hospital following the attack.
The incident occurred on a train bound for Huntingdon, with British Transport Police reporting the situation at around 7:40 p.m. local time (1940 GMT). Armed officers boarded the train after it was stopped at Huntingdon station, where the arrests were made.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes, with one passenger telling The Times that a man carrying a large knife caused panic as “blood was everywhere” and people hid in washrooms. Others were injured in the rush to escape, with some passengers reportedly being trampled as they fled.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “appalling” and “deeply concerning,” offering his thoughts to those affected and thanking emergency services for their swift response. Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood confirmed that two individuals had been taken into custody.
Dozens of emergency vehicles, including ambulances and air ambulances, were deployed to the scene. The East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that “multiple patients” had been transported to hospital. Witnesses at the station reported seeing people wrapped in space blankets as they were led away by responders.
The London North Eastern Railway (LNER) announced that all rail lines through Huntingdon were closed while emergency services managed the situation, causing significant disruption to travel.
Authorities have not yet released details on the number of injured or the motive behind the attack. Police have urged anyone in the area to follow official guidance as investigations continue.
