Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has been recognised with the “Unlock Big Change” award for his pioneering contributions to social and economic development and his steadfast commitment to education.

The award was presented at Theirworld’s Global Education Dinner in New York, held alongside the United Nations General Assembly. The annual event brings together world leaders and advocates to push forward the cause of universal education. Yunus was honoured alongside Filippo Grandi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The evening was co-hosted by Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education and former UK prime minister, and Sarah Brown, chair of Theirworld and executive chair of the Global Business Coalition for Education.

In his tribute, Gordon Brown hailed Yunus as a global trailblazer whose work has transformed lives. “No project in the private sector has done more to release people from poverty in the past 50 years,” Brown said.

Accepting the award, Yunus described credit as a basic human right, equal in importance to food, healthcare and education. “If you open the door to the financial system, nobody will be a poor person anymore,” he said. “I included education in the microcredit package, and we helped women make sure their children could go to school.”

The recognition highlights Yunus’s decades-long efforts to link financial empowerment with education, ensuring opportunities for future generations.
