Phil Campbell, the legendary lead guitarist of Motörhead, has died at the age of 64. His family announced the news on Instagram, saying he “passed away peacefully following a long and courageous battle in intensive care after a complex major operation.”
They remembered him as “a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather,” adding that he was deeply loved and will be missed “immensely” by everyone who knew him.
Campbell joined Motörhead in 1984 and became an integral part of the band’s unmistakable sound. In a tribute posted online, the band described him as “a wonderful guitarist, writer, performer, and musician who had Motörhead in his veins.” They said his presence always brought laughter, noting, “You could not be around him without a chuckle or twenty, because quite simply, Phil loved life and lived it with great joy.”
Motörhead, formed in 1975, carved out a four‑decade legacy in heavy metal, producing iconic tracks including the 1980 anthem Ace of Spades. The band disbanded in 2015 following the death of frontman Lemmy Kilmister.
After Motörhead’s end, Campbell continued touring with his own band, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons, performing alongside his three sons and keeping his musical spirit alive.
