The mother of a man fatally stabbed during a dispute over a motorcycle in Adelaide’s northern suburbs has told a court that her son’s death left a wound “that can never be healed.”
Johnathon Malcolm Goodfellow, aged 32, was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter in connection with the death of Jordan Torrans. Mr Torrans died after being stabbed six times at Goodfellow’s Salisbury Downs home on September 20, 2023.
During Monday’s court hearing, the Supreme Court heard 16 victim impact statements from Mr Torrans’s family. His mother, Dawn Torrans, described how her life was “shattered the day you killed my son.” She emphasized that her son was a “genuinely good person” and that his killing affected not just him but the entire family.
She expressed her grief over losing her son, stating, “You stole a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, an uncle, a cousin, a friend, and a father. You stabbed all of my family that day.” She added, “That wound is one that can never be healed, and I hope you are permanently forgotten from this world because you’re just another killer.”
Dawn Torrans also reflected on the personal loss, sharing, “I never get to see my mum and dad together again. We never get to have food together again, or car rides as a family. We can never call my dad when we need help. I now have to live longer without my dad than I did with him.”
Goodfellow’s defense lawyer, Jeffrey Powell, argued that the incident occurred during “a home invasion committed by Mr Torrans.” He told the court that when Mr Torrans arrived and entered the kitchen, Goodfellow was “entirely blameless,” and characterized the dispute as “tragically, in some way, nothing other than trifling.”
Goodfellow’s sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
