The mother of an Australian man detained while attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza says she is “very worried” and “shocked” by the lack of communication from the Australian government, amid reports her son has been physically abused in custody.
Surya McEwen, from Mullumbimby in northern New South Wales, was arrested on October 2 along with hundreds of other activists as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which sought to deliver food and medical supplies to Gaza.
His mother, Jacinta McEwen, said she had received reports that her son had been subjected to humiliating treatment and physical abuse in prison, and that he had begun a hunger strike.
She expressed anger at what she described as silence from Australian leaders. “I’m just absolutely shocked that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have not even contacted me as his mother, have not said anything about this,” she said.
