A mother, her young daughter and another passenger were killed on Friday morning when a speeding truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Shantiganj upazila of Sunamganj.

The crash took place around 7:15 a.m. near Shatrumardan Bagherkona village on the Sylhet–Sunamganj regional highway. Witnesses said the Sylhet-bound truck struck the oncoming auto-rickshaw with such force that two people died instantly.

The victims were identified as Keshba Priya, 40, of Ukilpara in Sunamganj town, her daughter Prathama Chowdhury, a seventh-grade student at Satish Chandra Girls’ High School, and Sajal Ghosh, 50, from Nabinagar.

Prathama was rushed to Shantiganj Upazila Health Complex with critical injuries but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her father, Pronoy Das, said his wife and daughter had been on their way to visit relatives in Sylhet when the tragedy occurred.

Family members described the loss as devastating, with relatives and neighbors mourning the deaths of the mother and daughter.

Police confirmed the incident and said the truck driver fled the scene. “We are working to trace the truck and its driver. Legal action will follow after a full investigation,” said Abdul Ahad, officer-in-charge of Shantiganj Police Station.

Local residents voiced frustration over frequent accidents on the highway, blaming reckless speeding and poor traffic regulation. They called on authorities to install speed breakers and increase monitoring to prevent further tragedies.
