A bushfire that scorched thousands of hectares and forced the evacuation of campers on Moreton Island, north of Brisbane, has been brought under control.
Authorities believe the blaze was sparked by a campfire lit on Saturday morning inside a declared fire ban zone. Investigations are ongoing, with both police and fire investigators examining the cause.
The fire, which spread rapidly across the 37-kilometre island, was listed as watch and act over the weekend before being downgraded to advice level on Monday. Firefighters battled through Saturday night and into Sunday to contain the flames, which ultimately burned 2,300 hectares.
Around 20 campers were relocated from the island’s north as a precaution. Rangers and wildlife staff remain on site to strengthen containment lines, while smoke continues to drift toward Brisbane.
Several areas of the national park remain closed, including Telegraph and Tempest Track as well as Eagers and Midnight Track. Blue Lagoon Road has since reopened following safety assessments.
An advice warning remains in place for areas north of Middle Road, including Cowan Cowan, Bulwer, and Blue Lagoon. A total fire ban continues to apply across Moreton Island until further notice.
