More than 2,500 police officers, including some carrying long‑arm firearms, will be deployed across Sydney during New Year’s Eve celebrations in an effort to boost public confidence following the Bondi terror attack earlier this month.
Tensions have remained high since the December 14 attack, which left 15 people dead and dozens injured.
Despite heightened security concerns, around one million people are expected to gather at harbourside locations for Sydney’s world‑famous fireworks displays at 9 p.m. and midnight.
NSW Police said thousands of uniformed and plain‑clothes officers will patrol the Sydney metropolitan area, with support from the riot squad, PolAir, the dog squad, and specialist traffic and water police.
NSW Premier Chris Minns said the enhanced measures including the deployment of long‑arm weapons are intended to help the public feel safe during the celebrations.
Transport authorities announced that hundreds of additional bus, train, and light rail services will operate throughout the night, representing a 40% increase compared to the busiest weekday, to help move crowds in and out of the city.
Revellers are being urged to plan ahead and take note of major road closures across key routes.
