Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the United States this September to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The visit comes at a time of heightened trade tensions between the two nations, with a potential meeting between Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump expected on the sidelines of the summit.
Trump is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 23, while Modi will deliver his speech on September 26. If the two leaders meet, it would mark a pivotal moment in India-U.S. relations, especially as trade disputes continue to escalate.
Since taking office for a second term, President Trump has increased tariffs on Indian exports from 15% to 25%, a move that came into effect on August 7. The situation intensified further after India began purchasing discounted oil from Russia following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump publicly criticized the move, accusing India of indirectly funding the conflict.
On August 6, the U.S. imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, bringing the total to a steep 50%. Analysts view Modi’s upcoming visit as diplomatically significant, with any dialogue between the two leaders potentially shaping the future of bilateral trade and strategic cooperation.
