Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized New Delhi’s commitment to its relationship with Dhaka during a bilateral meeting with Bangladesh Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok on Friday. Modi asserted that India has always prioritized its ties with Bangladesh, clarifying that it does not endorse any specific political party in the country.
Highlighting the historical connections between the two nations, Modi stated, “Our relationship is people-to-people.” He reaffirmed India’s support for a progressive, democratic, and inclusive Bangladesh, emphasizing that India’s allegiance lies with the nation itself, not with individuals or political organizations.
During the discussion, Modi acknowledged Prof. Yunus’s global stature and congratulated him on assuming the BIMSTEC chairmanship. The Indian Prime Minister also addressed tensions surrounding comments made by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, attributing misunderstandings to social media.
Regarding border issues, Modi noted that Indian border troops act only in self-defense, asserting that fatalities have occurred on Indian territory. Both leaders expressed a mutual commitment to preventing violence along the Bangladesh-India border.
Their 40-minute conversation was marked by respect and openness, concluding with well-wishes for each other’s health and a shared hope for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for both nations. Present at the meeting were Bangladesh Foreign Adviser Md Tauhid Hossain, Chief Adviser’s High Representative Khalilur Rahman, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, among others.
