Midnight Quake Devastates Eastern Afghanistan

1 min read

A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, unleashing widespread destruction across Kunar province and surrounding regions. The death toll has surged past 250, with at least 500 more injured. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach survivors trapped under rubble, as the central government mobilizes all available resources and personnel to aid the response.

The quake originated 27 kilometers northeast of Jalalabad, at a depth of 8 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. Measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, the tremor was followed by two significant aftershocks of magnitude 5.2, compounding the devastation and spreading panic throughout the region.

Kunar province bore the brunt of the disaster, with countless homes reduced to debris and hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of wounded. In Nangarhar, local health officials reported that emergency care is underway, but shortages of medical supplies and staff are straining the already fragile healthcare system.

Afghanistan’s interim government spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid, acknowledged the tragedy in a social media post, stating that “several eastern provinces have suffered loss of life and property in tonight’s unfortunate earthquake.” As the nation grapples with the aftermath, calls for international support and humanitarian aid are growing louder.
