US and Ukrainian envoys praised several days of talks in Miami as “productive and constructive,” yet the discussions ended without any clear progress toward ending the war with Russia.
Senior representatives from Ukraine, Russia and European partners gathered in southern Florida for separate meetings hosted by US President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff. The sessions were part of an intensified diplomatic push that began after Washington unveiled a 28 point proposal last month, a plan widely viewed as reflecting many of Moscow’s demands. The proposal has since been revised with input from Kyiv and European governments, though the updated details remain undisclosed.
In statements posted on X, Witkoff and Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov said the US Ukraine talks focused on aligning positions on four major documents: a 20 point plan, a multilateral security guarantee framework, a US security guarantee framework for Ukraine and an economic and prosperity plan. They noted that timelines and sequencing of next steps were key topics, but no future meetings were announced.
European national security advisers also joined the discussions to coordinate a unified strategy between Kyiv, Washington and European capitals.
Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev also met with the US delegation, which included Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Witkoff described those talks as similarly “productive and constructive”. However, the Kremlin dismissed recent revisions to the peace plan as unacceptable. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Dmitriev would relay the updated information to Moscow but reiterated that Europe’s involvement complicates negotiationsCNA.
War Continues on the Ground
Despite diplomatic activity, fighting has intensified. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the talks “constructive” and said they were progressing quickly, but warned that real progress depends on whether Russia genuinely wants to end the war. He also welcomed Europe’s pledge of 100 billion dollars in support over the next two years.
On the battlefield, Russian forces have continued advancing in eastern Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin recently celebrated territorial gains and signaled more to come. Zelensky reported that Russia launched about 1,300 attack drones, nearly 1,200 guided bombs and multiple missiles over the past week, with Odesa suffering heavy damage to ports, bridges and energy sites, leaving eight people deadCNA.
In the Sumy region, Ukrainian officials accused Russian troops of forcibly moving around 50 civilians, mostly elderly women, from the border village of Grabovske. Russia has not commented on the allegation.
