Lionel Messi made a dazzling impact off the bench, scoring in the final moments of the match as Inter Miami secured a 2-0 win over Jamaica’s Cavalier, advancing to the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory.
After being rested for Miami’s previous three matches, including the first leg against Cavalier, Messi entered the game in the 53rd minute to a rapturous reception from the crowd at the National Stadium. He capped off the evening with a deft finish, skillfully converting a through ball from 17-year-old Santiago Morales to send the ball past the advancing goalkeeper, Vinco Barclett.
Despite Miami having already sealed their fate in the match, the Jamaican fans erupted in cheers for Messi, thrilled to witness the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner grace their homeland for the first time.
From the outset, Miami sought to assert control, knowing that an away goal would effectively end Cavalier’s hopes. They began with attacking intent, though the bumpy pitch made it challenging to execute their usual fluid style. Luis Suarez came close with a well-placed volley that missed the target by inches.
Midfielder David Ruiz was forced off due to injury, replaced by Benjamin Cremaschi, but Miami’s momentum remained intact. The breakthrough came in the 37th minute when Tadeo Allende was fouled in the box by Christopher Ainsworth, leading referee Keylor Villalobos to award a penalty. Suarez stepped up and dispatched the spot kick confidently, extending Miami’s aggregate lead to 3-0.
Cavalier, despite the scoreline, showcased their youthful determination and nearly found the net when substitute Kaile Auvray’s low shot was met with a superb save from Miami’s goalkeeper, Oscar Ustari.
Messi’s late goal further solidified Miami’s dominance, securing their place in the last eight where they will face Los Angeles FC in an all-MLS clash. “He felt very good, he scored, and the Jamaican people could see him, so it was a great night for everyone,” said Miami head coach Javier Mascherano.
For Cavalier’s head coach, Rudolph Speid, the evening was a memorable one despite the defeat. “The atmosphere was electrifying. People came here to see Messi. Our performance was nothing to be ashamed of, and I believe many more young players will be inspired to play the game,” he reflected.
