Messi Headlines Argentina’s Final Qualifiers Squad

1 min read

Argentina has unveiled its preliminary squad for the last two matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, set to face Venezuela and Ecuador in early September. The list blends seasoned stars with emerging talents, led by captain Lionel Messi alongside Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez.

Notable omissions from the previous squad include defenders Valentín Barco, Kevin Lomónaco, and Mariano Troilo, as well as midfielders Enzo Barrenechea and Enzo Fernández. Fernández’s absence opens the door for a reshaped midfield, with Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri, and River Plate’s Gonzalo Montiel returning to the fold.

Coach Lionel Scaloni has also handed a first call-up to Palmeiras striker José Manuel López, who is awaiting his debut. Argentina will host Venezuela on September 5 before traveling to face Ecuador on September 10.
