Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced that state and federal counter-terrorism units will convene on Monday to address the ongoing investigation into the arson attack that devastated the Adass Israel synagogue in Ripponlea on Friday.
The incident has sent ripples of concern through the Jewish community, prompting sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed at the federal government. While police have yet to make any arrests, Premier Allan stated on Sunday morning that she received assurances from the chief commissioner regarding “progress” in the investigation.
Allan emphasized that the counter-terrorism units of Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police are “at the heart” of the inquiry into this deeply troubling attack. Although she refrained from labeling the incident as an act of terror, she acknowledged its intent to instill fear within Melbourne’s Jewish community.
“This was designed to strike terror into the hearts of the Jewish community here in Melbourne and Victoria and indeed around the nation,” Allan remarked. She pointed out the broader implications, stating, “An attack on a synagogue, an attack on a place of worship is an attack on our way of life in Victoria.”
The Premier strongly condemned the act and expressed her unwavering support for the Victoria Police as they continue their crucial work in investigating this alarming incident. The community, she noted, rightfully seeks updates on the progress of the investigation as they grapple with the ramifications of this assault on their sanctuary.
