A medical helicopter crashed onto a busy freeway in Sacramento, California, on Monday evening, leaving at least three people critically injured, according to the Sacramento Fire Department.
Flight tracking data showed the aircraft, identified as flight REH5, departing UC Medical Center at 2:05 a.m. UTC before its signal ended near El Dorado Freeway, also known as Highway 50.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty confirmed on X that the crash occurred on the eastbound lanes of Highway 50, west of 59th Street. He praised first responders and bystanders who rushed to help before additional emergency units arrived. “Survivors are being treated at local hospitals,” he said.
Authorities have closed sections of the freeway as investigations continue into the cause of the crash.
