A large home in the exclusive Mornington Peninsula suburb of Portsea, south of Melbourne, has been completely destroyed after a major fire early Saturday morning. Four people were inside the Stonecutters Road property when the blaze broke out around 7am, but all managed to escape without injury.
Dozens of Country Fire Authority (CFA) firefighters from brigades across the peninsula and Melbourne’s southern outskirts responded to the emergency. CFA Commander Glenn Philp said it took around two hours to bring the fire under control.
“We’re dealing with quite a complex house fire,” he said. “It’s not your suburban four‑bedroom house fire. The fire load was very intense, and getting it under control was extremely difficult due to access.”
The cause of the blaze remains unknown. Fire investigators are on their way to the scene, though police have confirmed the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
Commander Philp said crews worked to protect neighbouring properties as Victoria entered a day of extreme heat and statewide fire alerts. “There was a large amount of smoke, so a community warning was issued,” he added.
Firefighters are expected to remain at the site for an extended period. An excavator will be brought in to pull down the remains of the structure so crews can extinguish lingering hot spots.
