A devastating fire broke out at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, triggering a large-scale emergency response and forcing authorities to suspend flight operations temporarily. The blaze was first reported at 2:34 p.m. on October 18, when nine firefighting units rushed to the scene. As the flames intensified, reinforcements were called in, bringing the total to 36 fire service units battling the inferno, according to Fire Service media cell officer Talha Bin Jasim.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage remain unknown, and officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far. Alongside the fire service, specialized firefighting teams from the Bangladesh Air Force, Navy, and Army joined the operation, while two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed to assist in rescue and support efforts.
Airport authorities stressed that the passenger terminal was not directly affected, but as a precaution, all flight operations were suspended. Several incoming flights were diverted to Chattogram, Sylhet, and Kolkata, while alternative arrangements were made to minimize disruption to passenger services.
Eyewitnesses described thick plumes of smoke rising from the cargo complex, which serves as a critical hub for storing imported goods awaiting customs clearance. The fire has raised concerns about the safety and resilience of Bangladesh’s busiest international airport, which handles the majority of the country’s air cargo.
Analysts warn that the incident could have serious implications for both aviation and trade, as the Cargo Village plays a vital role in Bangladesh’s import-export operations. Any prolonged disruption could delay shipments, impact supply chains, and cause significant economic losses.
Authorities have pledged a full investigation into the cause of the fire once the situation is brought under control. For now, emergency crews remain on high alert as they work to contain the flames and secure the site.
