Mass Protests Sweep Israel Over Gaza Offensive and Hostage Fears

2 min read

Thousands of Israelis took to the streets on Saturday in cities including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, protesting the government’s plan to expand military operations in Gaza and seize control of Gaza City. The demonstrations, among the largest in recent months, were fueled by growing concern over the fate of hostages still held by Hamas.

Families of the hostages were at the forefront of the protests, warning that the proposed military escalation could endanger their loved ones. “This isn’t just a military decision. It could be a death sentence for the people we love most,” said Lishay Miran Lavi, whose husband is among those held captive.

The Israeli security cabinet recently approved five principles aimed at ending the war, including full security control over Gaza City. The move has sparked widespread domestic and international backlash, with critics arguing it will worsen the humanitarian crisis and jeopardize hostage negotiations.

Protesters called on the government to prioritize the safe release of hostages before proceeding with further military action. Some demanded a nationwide strike, urging civil society and labor unions to pressure the administration into reconsidering its strategy.

As tensions rise, the protests reflect deepening divisions within Israeli society over the handling of the war and the future of Gaza. The coming weeks may prove decisive for both the hostages and the broader regional stability.
