On Sunday, thousands of people across Serbia blocked streets in a bold display of anger over the recent arrests of anti-government protesters. The protests came a day after clashes between demonstrators and police during a large rally calling for early elections.
In the capital, Belgrade, protesters erected metal fences and stacked garbage containers at multiple locations. They also shut down a major bridge over the Sava River. In the northern city of Novi Sad, demonstrators threw eggs at offices belonging to the ruling party.
Reports indicate that smaller cities throughout the country also saw similar street blockades. The demonstrators demanded the immediate release of dozens of university students and other activists detained for their involvement in Saturday’s rally. Many are accused of attacking police or plotting to overthrow the government.
The rally in Belgrade drew tens of thousands of participants after nearly eight months of ongoing protests that have challenged the authority of the populist president. Protesters declared the current government illegitimate and blamed it for any violence that occurred.
