At least 41 people were killed and around 110 injured in Gaza on Friday as Israeli airstrikes targeted the territory throughout the day, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry released this information in a statement after nightfall. Since the IDF launched its operation in Gaza in October 2023, the total number of Palestinians killed has now reached 58,667, with nearly 140,000 injured.
On October 7, 2023, armed militants from Hamas launched a surprise attack into Israeli territory, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military campaign to counter Hamas and rescue the hostages. After over 15 months of intense fighting, Israel declared a ceasefire on January 19, under pressure from the United States and other mediators.
However, before two months had passed, on March 18, the IDF resumed operations in Gaza. Over the past two and a half months, approximately 7,843 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 27,993 injured in the renewed escalation. Among the 251 hostages taken by Hamas, at least 35 are believed to still be alive, and the Israeli military has announced plans to rescue these remaining captives.
The United Nations and the international community have repeatedly urged Israel to end military operations in Gaza. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has even filed a case accusing Israel of genocide.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated clearly that the ongoing operation aims to weaken Hamas completely and free the hostages. He emphasized that the military campaign will continue until these objectives are fully achieved.
