Marvel May Shift ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to Avoid Losing IMAX Screens to ‘Dune: Part Three’

What was shaping up to be a massive “Dunesday” box‑office showdown between Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three may now be avoided altogether. New industry reports suggest Marvel is considering moving its release date forward, not to dodge competition, but to secure access to premium IMAX screens during an already crowded December slate.

According to multiple outlets, Marvel is in talks to shift the film’s release to December 11, one week earlier than its current December 18 slot. The move comes after Dune: Part Three locked in its IMAX run as early as June 2024 meaning Marvel, which booked the same date a year later, would be shut out of IMAX entirely if it sticks to the original schedule.

The stakes are high. In 2019, Avengers: Endgame earned a staggering USD 91.5 million from IMAX alone during its opening weekend. Its one‑week solo run helped it become the fastest film in history to hit USD 1 billion, reaching the milestone in just five days before climbing to a lifetime total of USD 2.79 billion.

Meanwhile, Bollywood is also entering the December fray. King starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone and Abhishek Bachchan is slated for a December 25 release, adding even more heat to the holiday box‑office race.

With studios scrambling for premium screens and global audiences, December 2026 is shaping up to be one of the most competitive release windows in years.
