Manhunt Intensifies for Armed Suspect Missing in WA’s Midwest

Police continue their search for a man wanted over a shooting in Western Australia’s Midwest, confirming he does not hold a firearms licence as the manhunt stretches into its third day.

Kenneth John Giles, 58, vanished after a woman suffered a gunshot wound to her hand during an incident north of Mullewa on Wednesday night. She remains in Royal Perth Hospital in a stable condition.

The shooting triggered a major search effort involving local officers and specialist units flown in from Perth, including the Tactical Response Group and the Police Air Wing.

Midwest Gascoyne District Superintendent Neil Vanderplank said officers seized 16 firearms from the property where the incident occurred. He noted that while rural properties often contain firearms, none were registered to Giles.

Superintendent Vanderplank described Giles as an experienced bushman capable of surviving in remote terrain.

He said Giles could remain hidden for an extended period due to his ability to live off the land. Despite hundreds of public reports, police have not identified a solid lead on his location.

Authorities believe Giles is still within the vast Midwest Gascoyne region, which spans about 389000 square kilometres. Superintendent Vanderplank again urged him to surrender and said police resources would stay in place until he is found.
