A man responsible for the death of his pregnant partner south of Brisbane has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. In a decision delivered in the Supreme Court of Brisbane on Friday, Nilisi Kaniki was convicted of manslaughter for the death of Selma Ibrahim, whose life was tragically cut short in 2019.

The court found Kaniki not guilty of murder but guilty of the lesser charge after a jury deliberated earlier this week. The verdict also included the conviction for the killing of Ms Ibrahim’s unborn child, marking a devastating chapter in their lives.

Court proceedings revealed that Ms Ibrahim died from blunt force head injuries sustained inside her Crestmead home during the night of September 24 into the early hours of September 25, 2019. Medical evidence detailed the brutal assault, showing she was struck on both sides of her face, the back of her head, and other areas from multiple angles, resulting in severe brain bruising.

Justice Sean Cooper described the attack as causing the deaths of both Ms Ibrahim and her unborn child, emphasizing the violence of the blows inflicted by Kaniki. The sentencing underscores the gravity of the crime and the profound loss suffered by the family and community.
