A man who led police on a dramatic three-hour chase in a stolen food truck has admitted in court he was “not in the right headspace” during the incident.
Court Proceedings
Dylan Jake Fitzgerald pleaded guilty to six charges in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Tuesday, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving, and evasion. The court heard Fitzgerald was on parole at the time and had a lengthy criminal history across three states.
Appearing via video link, Fitzgerald said:
“Stupid, I only had two weeks left in my sentence and I f***** it up.” Magistrate Trinity McGarvie reminded him not to swear in her courtroom.
The Chase
Police prosecutor Sergeant Stuart Lydford told the hearing that Fitzgerald stole the truck from Elizabeth Street in Brisbane’s CBD on September 10 before driving north through Fortitude Valley and onto the Bruce Highway.
Fitzgerald sideswiped cars as boxes of food spilled onto the road from the truck’s open rear doors.
Police deployed a tyre deflation device, puncturing the truck’s tyres.
Despite this, Fitzgerald continued driving for about 100 km on bare wheel rims, causing sparks that ignited spot fires along the roadside.
He was eventually stopped south of Maryborough, bringing the chase to an end after three hours.
