A man has tragically died after the helicopter he was traveling in collided with a bird during a flight over the remote northeast Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. The incident occurred on Monday around 2 pm when the helicopter, carrying two people, made an emergency landing at Lake Evella airstrip in Gapuwiyak following the collision.
According to police, the impact is believed to have caused the bird to fatally strike the 54-year-old male passenger onboard. The pilot managed to land the aircraft safely and was uninjured.
Emergency services, including police and St John Ambulance paramedics, attended the scene and confirmed the man’s death. Authorities are now investigating the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner.
The Northern Territory police also stated that NT WorkSafe and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have been notified about the incident.
