A 37 year old man has died after crashing a rental e scooter in Geraldton overnight. Police say he was riding along the footpath beside Brand Highway near the Glendinning Road intersection in Tarcoola Beach when he lost control and fell shortly after midnight. He died at the scene.

Investigators are urging anyone who saw the man riding beforehand or has dash cam, CCTV or mobile phone footage to contact Crime Stoppers.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Jerry Clune described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy, especially so close to Christmas. He said it was the first e scooter related death in the city to his knowledge.

Clune noted that e scooter use in Geraldton has surged in recent years and warned that some devices are extremely fast and potentially dangerous. He added that new regulations are expected following a state government inquiry that issued 33 recommendations aimed at improving safety for both riders and pedestrians.
