Man Charged Over Placard Depicting Alleged Police Killer at Adelaide Rally

A man who was photographed holding a placard featuring alleged police killer Dezi Freeman during a rally in Adelaide has handed himself in to authorities and been charged with offensive behaviour.

The 39-year-old from Golden Grove attended a police station on Tuesday after being publicly urged to come forward. He was charged with a summary offence, which carries a potential fine, and has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court next month.

Acting Police Commissioner Linda Williams said the charge was the most appropriate under the circumstances and would now be tested in court. She welcomed the man’s decision to surrender, saying it allowed police to bring the matter to a conclusion and speak directly with him.

Addressing the broader context, Williams emphasised that Australians have the right to protest and described Sunday’s rally as “largely peaceful.” However, she noted that police become concerned when demonstrations cross into criminal conduct or incite violence or hatred.

Williams also confirmed that South Australian police have offered assistance to their Victorian counterparts in the ongoing search for Freeman, who remains wanted. She said contingency plans were in place should additional resources be required, adding that the longer the search continues, the more likely interstate support will be needed.
