Northern Territory police have arrested and charged a 61 year old man over the hit and run death of a woman in Darwin, following an extensive investigation led by the major crash unit.
The inquiry involved reviewing CCTV footage, conducting forensic examinations, analysing the crash scene and gathering witness statements. Police say the driver failed to stop, provide assistance or report the collision, which occurred in the early hours of December 27.
The victim, a 27 year old Indigenous woman, was struck on Bagot Road in Ludmilla, a six lane stretch that was poorly lit at the time. A passerby found her unresponsive, and she died before emergency services arrived. The area had been left in darkness after a light pole damaged in an earlier crash was never repaired.
Senior Constable Craig Tregea reminded the public that anyone involved in a traffic crash is legally required to stop, help where possible and notify authorities. He said failing to do so carries serious legal consequences, especially when someone is injured or killed.
Seven days after the incident, police arrested the man and charged him with one count of hit and run causing death.
