A 43-year-old man accused of a serious assault in Melbourne’s inner west was released from immigration detention after a landmark High Court decision in 2023. Police allege that Friday Yokoju assaulted a 62-year-old man at the intersection of Nicholson and Paisley Streets in Footscray on Sunday morning.
Yokoju was charged with intentionally causing serious injury and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday. The court was told that the alleged victim is on life support and is unlikely to survive.
The High Court ruling, which invalidated an earlier judgment that indefinite immigration detention was lawful, led to the release of approximately 140 detainees. Yokoju, however, remained in the community on a bridging visa with an ankle monitor while the Department of Home Affairs pursued his deportation.
During Monday’s court proceedings, Yokoju was heard yelling, and his lawyer requested an urgent psychiatric assessment. He was remanded in custody with no bail application made and is scheduled to return to court on October 20.
He has not yet entered a plea to the charges.
