A man has been charged following a violent attack on the Gold Coast that left an 18-year-old in critical condition.
Police reported that a 27-year-old woman was walking along Christine Avenue in Varsity Lakes just after 10:30pm on Friday when she discovered the young man from Carrara unconscious with severe head injuries. Investigators allege the victim was assaulted by a 34-year-old man who was not known to him.
As the woman called emergency services, the alleged offender, who had been waiting nearby, attacked her as well. Police arrived shortly afterward and arrested the man. During the arrest, officers say he spat on one of them.
The suspect, a 34-year-old man from Moggill, has been charged with grievous bodily harm, serious assault of a police officer and common assault. He is scheduled to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Saturday.
The 18-year-old victim was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The woman sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, where she is in stable condition.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
