Man Arrested After Six-Hour Standoff with Police in Newcastle

A man has been taken into custody following a nearly six-hour standoff with police at a residential apartment block in Newcastle. Authorities were alerted to the situation at a unit on Woodbine Street in Mayfield just before 11 AM on Sunday.

Prior to police arrival, a woman was able to exit the unit with minor injuries. In response to the incident, law enforcement evacuated all residents from the 22-unit apartment building, ensuring their safety.

After the situation was resolved, residents were allowed to return to their homes. The operation involved a significant response from NSW Police, including the Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command team, as well as personnel from NSW Ambulance and Fire and Rescue NSW.

According to a police spokesman, the man was arrested without incident around 5:20 PM. He has been taken to Newcastle Police Station and is currently assisting investigators with their inquiries.
