A man has been arrested after a car struck multiple pedestrians in Derby on Saturday night, leaving several victims seriously injured and prompting a major emergency response in the city centre.
Police said a black Suzuki Swift hit a number of people at Friar Gate around 9:30pm, triggering chaos as paramedics rushed to treat the wounded. Several of the injured were stabilised at the scene before being taken to hospital, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of casualties.
Derby Police moved quickly to reassure the public, stressing that the incident does not appear to pose any ongoing threat. Officers said they understand the community’s alarm but believe the situation is contained.
Shortly after the collision, police intercepted a vehicle believed to be involved and arrested the driver, a man in his 30s. He remains in custody as investigators work to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
Friar Gate has been closed from Curzon Street and Cheapside to Ford Street and is expected to remain shut for an extended period while forensic teams examine the scene.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities appeal for witnesses and dash‑cam footage to piece together what happened.
