A man in his 50s is in critical condition following a fuel tank explosion on his recreational boat in Lake Heights, New South Wales. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Sunday, with witnesses describing a loud “bang” from a home on Trevor Avenue.
Emergency services were called to the scene, where they found the man lying several meters from his damaged vessel. He sustained lacerations and burns to his head and face. Neighbors, including Toby Alexander, captured video footage of bystanders attempting to hose down the man’s burns until paramedics arrived.
According to a NSW Ambulance spokesperson, the victim was working on the boat in his front yard when the explosion happened. NSW Police attributed the blast to a combination of fuel vapors and an open flame, confirmed by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), which reported that a power tool was in use at the time.
While there was minor damage to the front of the home, FRNSW noted that the boat sustained significant damage. Police have classified the incident as misadventure and will not conduct an investigation. The injured man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital for further treatment.
