At least 20 people, including two police officers, were killed in a large-scale security operation against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian authorities confirmed on Tuesday. The deadly crackdown comes just days before the country is set to host the United Nations COP30 global climate summit, sparking widespread debate.
Rio Governor Cláudio Castro said in a social media post that the government remains firm in its stance against drug-related violence and organized crime. Nearly 2,500 security personnel took part in the raids across the Alemão and Penha favela complexes, densely populated neighborhoods long under the control of criminal groups.
Officials reported that 18 of those killed are suspected of having ties to drug trafficking gangs. Police also arrested at least 56 people and executed 250 arrest and search warrants during the operation.
The timing of the raids has drawn international attention, as Rio de Janeiro prepares to host major global events next week, including the C40 World Mayors Summit and the Earthshot Prize ceremony spearheaded by Prince William. The high-profile gatherings are expected to attract international figures such as pop star Kylie Minogue and four-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel.
