In a significant operation targeting illegal activities in South Australia’s Mid-North and Eyre Peninsula regions, police have confiscated $1,572,000 worth of illegal tobacco and $444,000 in cash. The raids, conducted from April 1 to April 3 as part of Operation Eclipse, focused on 31 premises across Port Pirie, Port Augusta, Whyalla, and Port Lincoln.
Authorities targeted a diverse range of locations, including tobacconists, barber shops, gift shops, mini-marts, commercial storage facilities, and residential properties. The operation was a collaborative effort involving the Serious and Organised Crime Branch, local police units, and the government’s Consumer and Business Services (CBS) division.
One notable arrest was made: a 51-year-old man from Whyalla Playford, who was found with $225,655 in cash. Detective Chief Inspector Brett Featherby, commander of Operation Eclipse, stated that these seizures have “significantly disrupted the activities of syndicates” operating in these regional areas, sending a strong message against illegal trade practices.
