Durga Puja, the main religious festival of Sanatan religions, has started with the celebration of Mahalaya in Canada. The event was held on Friday (October 4) evening at the Bengali Association of Calgary’s Southeast own temple building.
Mahalaya is an important part of Durga festival, the biggest religious festival of the Sanatans. Because this is the beginning of Devipaksha. The counting of Durga Puja starts from this day.
Mahalaya is an important part of the autumn Durga Puja. According to Puran, Goddess Durga was responsible for killing Mahishasu on this day. Devotees are invoking the goddess through Chandipath.
After Mahalaya, Durgotsavam will officially begin on October 12 through Shasthi Puja. Durgotsavam will end with idol worship on October 14 Dashami.
Keeping in mind the safety and convenience of all devotees and visitors, the Calgary Bengali Parishad has organized this year’s Durga Puja at the ‘Hywood Centre’ in High River.
