2 min read

At 38 years old, Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi shows no signs of slowing down. In his latest five-match stretch with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), Messi has scored two goals in each game, and on Sunday morning, he led Miami to a 2-1 victory over Nashville SC with his brace.

Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, curling a low free-kick through a crowd, marking his 35th free-kick goal since 2018 more than his penalty tally of 33 during that period. His second goal came in the 62nd minute, with the assist initially coming from a Nashville goalkeeper’s mistake passing the ball directly to Messi, who then beat another defender before slotting it into the net.

This makes Messi’s tally in the current MLS season 15 goals in 16 matches, along with six assists, totaling 21 direct contributions. Since joining Miami in summer 2023, Messi has scored 55 goals in 66 matches for the club, and overall, he has now netted 872 goals for both club and country.

Notably, Messi also set a record by scoring in five consecutive MLS matches, surpassing his previous four-match streak the first player in MLS history to do so. Additionally, he’s now the fourth-highest scorer from free-kicks, with 69 goals in that set-piece, further cementing his legendary status.

His goal against Nashville came from a precise, low free kick, his 35th since 2018, a number that exceeds his total penalty goals during the same period. This ongoing run highlights Messi’s enduring brilliance and his remarkable influence on the MLS, where he continues to rewrite records and elevate the sport’s profile.
