Linda McMahon Selected as Education Secretary by President-Elect Trump

President-elect Donald Trump has announced Linda McMahon, his transition co-chair, as his nominee for Secretary of the Department of Education. This decision, revealed on Tuesday, follows Trump’s prior announcement of Howard Lutnick as his choice for Commerce Secretary.

In a statement, Trump praised McMahon’s extensive leadership experience and her commitment to enhancing American education. He emphasized her role in shifting educational power back to the states, aiming to elevate the nation’s educational standing globally.

McMahon, a prominent Republican donor and former CEO of WWE, previously served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term. After resigning from that role in 2019, she became chair of America First Action, a pro-Trump super PAC, and currently chairs the America First Policy Institute, which is viewed as a think tank preparing for Trump’s potential second term.

Trump’s selection of McMahon comes amid his longstanding calls to reduce the federal government’s involvement in education, including discussions about potentially abolishing the Department of Education. While dismantling the agency would be challenging, McMahon may focus on reallocation of programs and funding, allowing states more autonomy.

Under her leadership, the Department of Education may also seek to reverse changes made by the Biden administration regarding Title IX, particularly concerning protections for LGBTQ+ students, aligning with Trump’s campaign positions.

In addition to her political endeavors, McMahon has a notable history in business, having transformed WWE into a major media corporation before stepping down as CEO in 2009. Despite her previous unsuccessful Senate campaigns in Connecticut, her political and business influence remains significant in the Republican landscape.
