Senior Victorian Liberal MP is demanding that Deputy Leader Sam Groth provide clarity after reports emerged that he used a taxpayer-funded vehicle to travel home with his wife following a day at the Australian Open. The Herald Sun revealed that Groth utilized a chauffeured car belonging to colleague Georgie Crozier for the 100-kilometre journey from Melbourne’s CBD to Rye on the Mornington Peninsula in January 2024.
It is alleged that Groth, who was reportedly intoxicated at the tournament, misled Ms Crozier by claiming the vehicle was needed for a work-related event. While Groth often attends official functions in his role as shadow minister for tourism, sport, events, and hospitality, the day also featured a Coalition fundraiser with Nationals MP Jade Benham.
On Friday, Ms Crozier told the media that it was now “up to the leadership” to clarify Groth’s actions. “Victorians deserve a lot better,” she added.
Groth has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that his attendance at the Australian Open was in both an official and personal capacity. “I was at the event to meet stakeholders and attend meetings before participating in a fundraising initiative,” he stated.
He dismissed allegations of intoxication as “wrong,” emphasizing that “everything was and is above board,” and claimed that all details had been “officially disclosed,” insisting there was “nothing to hide.”
The controversy raises questions about the appropriate use of taxpayer resources and the transparency of political conduct amid ongoing scrutiny of politicians’ conduct in public service.
